Back and breathing problems are common among those with scoliosis. Therefore, getting treatment early can prevent complications further down the line. If you have misalignment or have noticed misalignment in your child’s posture, our team at BETTER LIFE Family Chiropractic & Wellness can help. We employ the latest chiropractic techniques to address spine issues and improve posture.
What Is Scoliosis?
Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine that is most often diagnosed in adolescence. Most cases of spinal curvature are mild, but some curves can get worse as children grow. Severe scoliosis can be disabling. An especially severe spinal curve can reduce the amount of space within the chest. This can make it hard for the lungs to function properly.
The curvature of the spine in children should be monitored closely. If no measures are taken to address the issue, the curvature can get worse and require surgery later in adulthood.
What Causes Scoliosis?
Common types of scoliosis, like dextroscoliosis, seem to have a hereditary component. Less common types such as levoscoliosis, which is a congenital form of the disease, are caused by birth defects. There are several other issues that can cause a curved spine. These include:
- Neuromuscular conditions like cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy.
- Injuries or infections that affect the spine.
- Previous surgery on the chest wall as a baby.
- Spinal cord abnormalities.
How Can Chiropractic Treatment Help?
Chiropractic manipulation performed here at our Spokane office can help restore some proper alignment to the spine and joints. When you visit us, Dr. Chad will work with you to develop a non-invasive plan for addressing the multiple symptoms of scoliosis.
While these measures can’t straighten your spine completely, they can improve its curvature. Regular chiropractic visits can also alleviate pain, improve your range of motion, and reduce the overall severity of the problem.
